TORN: A Documentary on the Fabric of the Father-Son Relationship 💔
I just watched one of the most beautiful documentaries ever. I wanted to share it with you.
On Oct. 5, 1999, legendary climber Alex Lowe was tragically lost alongside cameraman and fellow climber David Bridges in a deadly avalanche on the slopes of the Tibetan mountain, Shishapangma. Miraculously surviving the avalanche was Alex’s best friend and climbing partner, renowned mountaineer Conrad Anker. After the tragedy, Anker and Alex’s widow, Jennifer, fell in love and married, and Anker stepped in to help raise Alex’s three sons.

Father-Son Relationships Fascinate Me
TORN has completely shaken me to my core. It is brutally beautiful.
I am incredibly lucky to have a father who helps me chase my dreams. When I got into kiting, he did too. When I got into startups, he did too. When I got into investing, he did too. We have been on a bunch of wild adventures together.
My dad is fondly known as Father Ted. It is a play on his teddy-bear looks and the Irish show of the same name.
What I admire so much about him is how he never, ever tells me what to do. He just has a conversation with me about what I think and why. It is a subtle but crucial part of how my brain is structured. I cannot be told. I love to be debated.
Together, we have explored the wildest seas and the smoothest powder fields. It has made my life so much more fun.
Max Lowe is someone I met when I started Balance in 2016. He was shooting for National Geographic. Watch him explain why he made TORN:
I do not want to spoil this documentary. I just want to share it. It is beautiful.
